Saudi banks are entering a different phase in the second half of 2026. Deposit growth has begun to outpace credit growth among the largest listed lenders, easing part of the liquidity pressure seen at the end of 2025. Yet stronger liquidity does not automatically mean a return to cheap funding, because the mix and cost of deposits now matter more.
In Samer Choucair's reading, deposits at the ten largest banks rose about 2.7% quarter-on-quarter in Q2, compared with roughly 1.8% growth in net loans, bringing the loans-to-deposits ratio down to around 103.1%. At the sector level, both credit and deposits continued to expand, but time and savings deposits grew faster than low-cost balances.
Why funding cost now matters more than funding volume
The key question therefore shifts from whether liquidity exists to what that liquidity costs. A bank can improve its liquidity ratios while still paying more to attract term deposits. Protecting net interest margins, pricing credit correctly and maintaining asset quality become the real test as the rate cycle changes.
Choucair's core point is that lower rates are not automatically positive for every bank. The outcome depends on how quickly assets and liabilities reprice, the deposit mix, credit demand and each bank's ability to preserve a low-cost funding base.
